Mary and Meemaw stare at him. Then Meemaw laughs. Then Mary laughs. The tension breaks.

Meemaw deflects: “I found a quarter in the parking lot.” Sheldon: “That’s not dubious. That’s lucky. But you’re lying.” Mary sends Sheldon to his room. Sheldon can’t let it go. He creates a “Probability of Deception” chart on his whiteboard, factoring in Meemaw’s increased heart rate (he counted her pulse at dinner), her refusal to eat the chimichanga (her favorite), and a faint smell of lottery scratch-off residue on her fingers. young sheldon s03e08 m4p

Mary storms out, humiliated. Mary is furious at Meemaw — not for the gambling, but for the lying and the public scene. Sheldon listens from the stairs. He goes downstairs and says: “I calculated that if Meemaw had told the truth immediately, the probability of a fight was 23%. By lying, it rose to 89%. Therefore, her sin wasn’t greed. It was poor statistical reasoning.” Mary and Meemaw stare at him

Sheldon takes this as permission to investigate. Dinner. Meemaw is unusually quiet. Sheldon watches her like a hawk. He notices she avoids eye contact when anyone mentions “extra money.” He asks directly: “Meemaw, have you acquired a sum of money through morally dubious means?” Mary nearly chokes on her meatloaf. George Sr. tries to hide a smile. The tension breaks

Mary announces that Meemaw is coming over for dinner. She’s been acting secretive lately, and Mary suspects she’s hiding something “sinful.” Sheldon, ever literal, asks if she means actual sin (greed, envy, lust) or the colloquial “sinful” like eating an entire cake. Mary sighs. Meemaw (Connie) is on the phone, speaking in hushed tones. She’s just won $1,500 on a lottery ticket. She hangs up, grinning. But then her face falls — she realizes if Mary finds out, she’ll lecture her about gambling being a vice. Worse, if Sheldon finds out, he’ll calculate the statistical improbability of her win down to the tenth decimal and ruin her joy.

He recruits Missy as a spy, offering her a week’s worth of his dessert pudding. Missy agrees immediately. Missy sneaks into Meemaw’s house while she’s in the bathroom. She opens the fridge, finds the Chili’s box, and pulls out the lottery ticket. She stares at it. “One thousand five hundred dollars?!” Meemaw catches her.
