The episode introduces Ragnar Lothbrok, a farmer and aspiring explorer who believes the raiding routes to the west (England) are possible, contrary to the orders of his oppressive local chieftain, Earl Haraldson. Ragnar secretly builds a new type of longship and, with his brother Rollo, defies the Earl to sail west. They successfully raid a monastery at Lindisfarne (Northumbria), returning with treasure—but also inadvertently revealing their home’s location to future reprisals. vikings season one episode one
