Unclogging | Sewer Link
Sewage contains harmful bacteria (E. coli, hepatitis, parasites). Wear heavy-duty rubber gloves, safety goggles, and old clothes. Work in a well-ventilated area. If you have a septic tank , do not use chemical drain openers—they kill the bacteria your tank needs. Step 1: Diagnose a Main Sewer Clog vs. a Local Clog | Symptom | Likely Problem | | --- | --- | | Only one sink/tub drains slowly | Local clog (hair, soap scum) | | Water backs up in the lowest drain (e.g., basement floor drain or shower) when you flush an upstairs toilet | Main sewer clog | | Toilet bubbles/gurgles when you run a nearby sink | Main sewer clog | | Multiple drains are slow or gurgling | Main sewer clog | | Sewage smell coming from drains | Partial main clog |
