Singam (2011) – The Film That Redefined the Mass Cop Entertainer
Upon release, Singam received positive reviews for Suriya’s performance and Hari’s direction. It ran for over 100 days in many theatres and was a massive box office success. The film spawned two sequels ( Singam II in 2013, Singam III in 2017) and was remade in Hindi as Singham (2011) starring Ajay Devgn, which itself launched a successful franchise in Bollywood.
The story follows Duraisingam (Suriya), a no-nonsense, sincere sub-inspector in the small town of Nallur, near Tuticorin. He’s loved by his people, respects his elders, and is an incorruptible force of justice. Everything changes when he clashes with a powerful smuggling don, Mayil Vaahanam (Prakash Raj), who operates from neighbouring Kumbakonam. What begins as a local land dispute escalates into a state-wide war. When Mayil crosses the line and harms Duraisingam’s loved ones, the gentle village cop transforms into the roaring lion——and moves to Chennai for a final, explosive showdown.
Singam isn't trying to be a realistic cop drama. It’s a full-on, mass commercial entertainer that knows exactly what its audience wants—and delivers it with a roar. If you haven't watched it yet, or want to relive the magic, grab some popcorn and get ready for 2 hours 45 minutes of solid, old-fashioned heroism.

If you’re a fan of high-voltage action, punchy dialogues, and a hero who walks in only to take down an entire crime syndicate with his bare hands, Singam is mandatory viewing. Directed by Hari, this 2011 Tamil film didn’t just launch a franchise—it redefined the template for the "rural cop" genre in Kollywood.
