Audio preservation traditionally requires lossless formats (FLAC, WAV). This study investigates whether perceptually transparent Opus encoding (256 kbps VBR) can replace FLAC for certain archival tiers, reducing storage by ~80% without audible degradation. Double-blind ABX tests with trained listeners show no statistically detectable difference between Opus (192 kbps and above) and original CD audio for 23 of 24 samples.
