Mount Valluvan (often referred to as Valluvar Malai in Tamil) is a notable hillock located near Uthiramerur in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu, India. While not a towering Himalayan giant, its significance looms large in the cultural, spiritual, and literary history of the Tamil people. The site is intimately associated with the Thirukkural , the revered Tamil text on ethics and morality, and its legendary author, Thiruvalluvar . Location and Geography The hill is situated approximately 85 kilometers southwest of Chennai, off the busy Chengalpattu–Vandavasi road. Unlike the rocky, barren hills typical of the Eastern Ghats, Mount Valluvan is a modest, verdant granite outcrop rising to about 60 feet (18 meters). Its gentle slopes are dotted with scrub vegetation, and the summit offers a panoramic view of the surrounding paddy fields and villages that characterize the Kanchipuram countryside. Historical and Mythological Significance The primary legend associated with Mount Valluvan is that Thiruvalluvar , the classical Tamil poet and philosopher, is said to have lived and composed the Thirukkural here. While mainstream historians debate the exact period of Valluvar (ranging from 300 BCE to 500 CE) and his birthplace (Mayilapur, Madurai, or Thirunayanarkurichi), the claim of Mount Valluvan as his hermitage is deeply rooted in regional folklore.
