If 2019 was the year the world “discovered” Malayalam cinema (thanks to Kumbalangi Nights and Jallikattu ), and 2020 was the year it paused, then 2021 was the year it detonated. Coming out of a devastating pandemic wave, the Malayalam film industry (Mollywood) didn’t just limp back to life—it reinvented itself.

Stuck between theatre closures and OTT booms, Malayalam filmmakers in 2021 did something unprecedented: they threw out the rulebook. The result was a barrage of films that were smaller in budget but gigantic in ambition.

Looking back, 2021 wasn't a "pandemic year" for Malayalam movies. It was a creative renaissance. It taught the industry that when you strip away the gloss, the raw, flawed, screaming humanity underneath is what makes a film truly unforgettable.
