A unified company marching on Mordor would have been crushed. It is the splitting apart—the cracks between the members’ paths—that enables decoys, diversions, and the stealth necessary for the Ring-bearer. Tolkien suggests that unity is a starting point, but fragmentation is a strategy. The whole must break to become effective.
