Rama befriends Sugriva, helps him defeat and kill Vali in a duel, and restores Sugriva's kingdom of Kishkindha. In return, Sugriva agrees to help Rama find Sita. Sugriva sends his powerful general, Hanuman, along with armies of monkeys in all four directions to search for her. The southern search party, led by Angada (Vali's son) and Hanuman, learns from the vulture Sampati (brother of Jatayu) that Sita is held captive in Lanka.
