J-dramas are live-action television series produced in Japan. Unlike the long-running, open-ended nature of many Western or Latin American shows (e.g., Grey’s Anatomy ), most J-dramas are short and contained : typically 9–12 episodes of around 45 minutes, aired over a single three-month season (called a cour ). This structure allows for tight storytelling with a clear beginning, middle, and end.
