A popular (but unconfirmed) theory on Reddit claims the name is a commentary on algorithmic surveillance: “Happenstance” (unplanned), “Brooklyn” (hyper-local), “Gray” (neither confirmed nor denied).
Gray has never confirmed or denied anything. In a 2024 interview for a podcast called Ghosts in the Feed , a voice claiming to be Gray—distorted, calm, possibly synthesized—was asked why they choose to remain unseen. “Because the moment you know my face, you stop seeing the work. You start seeing a career. I’m not a product. I’m a happenstance. I’m Brooklyn. I’m gray.” When asked if they worry about being forgotten, the voice laughed softly. “Everything is forgotten. But an accident?
