He pulled back his hood. His eyes were the same shade as the dead riverbed. “Kael. And I’ve already died once today. I’m not afraid of a second time.”

“I’m not asking for a blessing.” He placed the pouch on the altar stone. Inside was a single seed—black as ink, warm as a heartbeat. “I stole this from the Shadow Merchant’s vault. It’s your heartseed.”
