Mara scrolled through Jenny’s timeline. There, two weeks ago, was a photo of a high school reunion picnic. Her mother wasn’t in the photo, of course. But there was a comment from "Jenny" under the photo:

He bought a gun last month. David got him to admit, in a private chat, that he planned to 'confront' Mara at her own daughter’s birthday party. Screenshots sent to local PD. Her first thought was spam. Her mother, Elaine, had been technologically cautious, not the type to hoard digital skeletons. But when Mara double-clicked, the file opened to reveal something far more unsettling than a password dump. But there was a comment from "Jenny" under

Mara looked at the file again. At the very bottom, under "Status," there was one final line she hadn’t noticed:

Mara hadn't meant to find it. She was cleaning out her late mother’s old laptop—the one with the cracked screen and the sticky ‘H’ key—when she stumbled upon a plain text file.

Mara’s hands went cold. She recognized only the first one—her mother’s real account, which she had memorialized two months ago. The rest were strangers. Or rather, strangers wearing her mother’s writing style.
