The European Social Survey (ESS) Portal provides harmonized cross-national survey data. This paper demonstrates a full analytical workflow using the ESS Portal’s API and R package essurvey . We analyze trends in immigration attitudes across 10 countries over six rounds. Results show a significant polarization post-2015, with education level emerging as the strongest moderator. We conclude with recommendations for secondary data users.
