In the rich tapestry of Sikh tradition, few devotional compositions offer as much solace and hope to the distressed as Dukh Bhanjani Sahib . The very name translates to “the Destroyer of Sorrows” or “the Eradicator of Pain.” This powerful bani (sacred hymn) is not a separate text within the Guru Granth Sahib but is a specific collection of 22 Shabads (hymns) from the Ramkali Ki Vaar (a section of the holy scripture). These hymns were composed by Guru Arjan Dev Ji , the fifth Sikh Guru, and are revered for their immense spiritual and healing power. The Legend and Significance The title “Dukh Bhanjani” is deeply rooted in a historical incident at Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib in Patiala. It is believed that a devout Sikh woman, Bibi Rup Kaur, was suffering from severe leprosy. On the advice of a holy man, she traveled to the sacred pool near the Gurdwara and recited the 22 specific Shabads from the Guru Granth Sahib with unwavering faith. Miraculously, she was cured. Since then, these particular hymns have been compiled and recited as “Dukh Bhanjani Sahib” for relief from physical ailments, mental anguish, anxiety, and life’s many hardships.
"Those who recite these Shabads with devotion, all their sorrows are removed, and they find everlasting peace." (Common traditional belief associated with Dukh Bhanjani Sahib) dukh bhanjani sahib path pdf
