Shakti Peetha List | Ashtadasa
1. Introduction In Hindu theology, the Shakti Peethas are shrines dedicated to the Divine Mother (Goddess Sati/Parvati/Durga). The legend originates from the Daksha Yajna and the death of Goddess Sati. Overwhelmed with grief, Lord Shiva carried her burning corpse across the universe. To stop the cosmic destruction, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to dismember the body. The parts of Sati’s body (or her ornaments) fell at 51 different locations across the Indian subcontinent (and beyond).
Among these, and are known as the Ashtadasa Shakti Peethas (अष्टादश शक्ति पीठ). "Ashtadasa" means eighteen.
