She closed the laptop.

The cursor blinked mockingly in the final paragraph of her doctoral thesis. Not the final draft , not the almost-there version. The final, binding, submit-by-midnight version. The one she’d spent three years, two continents, and one catastrophic heartbreak writing. The one on the history of indigenous land rights in the Chaco region—a subject so niche and so personal that the very letters felt like small, sharp bones she had to arrange into a skeleton of truth.

She closed the tab.

She saved the document. Emailed it to Dr. Hendricks. Then she leaned back in her chair and laughed—a raw, shaking, slightly hysterical laugh.
